Frequently Asked Questions

Judy Cho founded Nutrition with Judy to focus on nutritional wellness with a focus on digestive function. Animal-based nutrition with limited carbohydrates maximizes nutrient density, enhances absorption, and optimizes nutrient assimilation. As most of the immune system is housed in the gut, the digestive system can heal, and the immune system strengthens with the right food as medicine.

Over time, as Judy worked with thousands of clients, the scope of the practice expanded beyond holistic health nutrition. Chronic infections and illnesses sometimes require diet, gut healing, and additional [fill-in-the-blank] support.

With the addition of functional medicine practitioners specializing in CIRS, MCAS, Lyme treatment, and Mind-Body work—including nervous system regulation and limbic system retraining—we decided to separate the clinical practice from Nutrition with Judy.

To provide comprehensive care, we also collaborate with licensed physicians who can prescribe medications when temporary support is needed for severe pain.

Nutrition with Judy continues to focus on free holistic health resources, evidence-based research, comprehensive articles, podcasts, and social media content. We firmly believe in wellness for all.

Empower Functional Health was born out of the heart to serve in Nutrition with Judy. Our private clinical practice provides comprehensive functional medicine support and personalized care to address complex health challenges. The updated name better reflects the breadth of services and expertise we provide. We will always consider animal-based nutrition and proper gut function as a fundamental baseline of health.

You will receive an invoice immediately after purchase, followed by an email within two business days. This email will include instructions on completing the necessary intake forms, including the Personalized Health Plan (if applicable) and health questionnaires.

If you ordered a Personalized Health Plan, once your completed forms are received, our practitioner team will review them and provide your personalized report within approximately five business days.

If you signed up for a 1-on-1 session or package, you’ll need to review and sign our informed consent and disclaimer form before your functional health session. Once completed, you’ll receive an email with scheduling instructions.

For all sessions, we require signing our intent and disclaimer form. You should receive it via email, where you can complete it with an electronic signature.

For Personalized Health Plan sessions, completing the Personalized Health Plan and questionnaires is essential for a thorough review and personalized care. The more detail you provide, the better our understanding of your medical history and establishing a baseline for personalized care. Once submitted, we will assess the information and prepare your plan before your session.

We highly recommend reviewing your results beforehand to maximize the value of your 1-on-1 session and set yourself up for success.

If you scheduled a 1-hour session without a Personalized Health Plan, come prepared with your questions for your practitioner. You’ll receive session notes and actionable steps afterward, allowing you to stay focused without worrying about note-taking.

Our clients and patients achieve the best results for Personalized Health Plan sessions when they review their personalized plan beforehand. This preparation allows you to come with focused questions, allowing for a better goal-setting process. During the session, we’ll dive deep into your results, medical history, and address any questions you may have.

After the session, we’ll provide detailed notes and the agreed-upon goals to focus on for your next session.

Limited support is available exclusively for clients and patients enrolled in packages or continuation plans. This includes email support for clarifying questions and concerns about your Personalized Health Plan in collaboration with your functional health practitioner.

Some of the packages have group support access, providing additional support.

For more comprehensive care, we recommend scheduling follow-up sessions.

Yes, all our sessions are now held virtually, eliminating the need for travel. Since COVID-19, we have transitioned to virtual-only sessions and no longer meet in person.

Bloodwork is a valuable tool for monitoring health, but it’s not the only tool. One limitation of bloodwork is that it provides a single snapshot of time. As an example, minerals are often better assessed through hair mineral analysis or intracellular blood tests, making comprehensive testing costly and sometimes unnecessary.

Our bodies have innate wisdom, and your symptoms provide key insights into root-cause issues. While we don’t always start with lab testing—especially as it may be inaccessible to some international clients—we prioritize a comprehensive review of your medical history, current and past symptoms, and focus areas. When appropriate, we incorporate lab testing to support your healing journey.

*Note: We believe root-cause healing is a collaborative journey. If you are in the U.S. and want to do blood labs, we can order them as part of your intake process.

We offer a wide range of functional labs and tests, including gut microbiome stool analysis, urinary tests, hormone testing, hair mineral analysis, micronutrient testing, heavy metals screening, chronic Lyme testing, mold illness (CIRS) testing, and environmental toxin assessments.

Our functional health practitioners collaborate with you to recommend the most appropriate tests based on your symptoms and health goals. While we aim to minimize testing to reduce costs, additional tests may be necessary in certain cases.

Empower Functional Health has access to most bloodwork, labs, and functional tests. We also partner with MDs, NDs, DOs, and other medical professionals to provide comprehensive, holistic care, including prescription support and in-person testing such as bloodwork and MRIs.

Supplements: Our dietary recommendations often include supplements to address initial gaps and support healing. These may include gut-healing supports, minerals, fatty acid supplements, adrenal aids, or other targeted solutions based on individual needs. While we recommend high-quality practitioner-grade products made in small batches, we understand this can be costly. If you find a comparable product, we are supplement-neutral and encourage what works best for you.

Lab Tests: Occasionally, we recommend additional testing to uncover root-cause imbalances. For instance, if a client or patient struggles to lose weight despite following the protocol and has significant weight to lose, we may suggest bloodwork to check for insulin resistance and underlying inflammation. Similarly, if a client or patient has tried common gut-healing supports but continues to experience severe gut issues, we might recommend a comprehensive stool test for further insights.

It varies for each individual and your level of commitment, but we generally recommend a minimum 3-month journey with us. Consistent accountability plays a crucial role in the healing process.

Yes, we’ve worked with a wide range of clients and patients, including pregnant mothers, four-month-old babies, and individuals over 80. Approximately 60% of our clients and patients are female and 40% are male, with most ranging from their 20s to 70s.

Yes, we work with clients globally.

While we work with clients worldwide, some have difficulty accessing supplements. To address this, we partner with a provider that offers U.S. supplements in the United Kingdom and most European countries. Additionally, we provide detailed ingredient lists for our recommended supplements, allowing you to find similar products locally if needed.

While we do not accept insurance, your insurance carrier may reimburse you. We provide out-of-network insurance invoices for our sessions and bloodwork. We advise you to consult your insurance provider to see if our services qualify. Bloodwork almost always qualifies.

Judy works with individuals on a case-by-case basis.

Thousands of clients and patients have received care from our functional health practitioners, all personally trained by Judy. The team works closely to ensure every client and patient receives the highest level of care.

Our functional health practitioners are trained to use professional tools to assess each client or patient’s unique needs. A key part of this process is the Personalized Health Plan, which incorporates a detailed nutritional assessment, comprehensive medical history, and targeted clinical questions about bodily systems. This standardized approach allows us to analyze symptoms, identify dietary and lifestyle needs, and prioritize areas of the body requiring support. By combining this data with clinical expertise, we develop tailored, bioindividual plans to guide clients and patients toward root-cause healing and optimal wellness.

With experience working with thousands of clients and patients, our team excels at troubleshooting common root-cause issues in chronic illness. We assess imbalances and deficiencies while addressing key questions: Is there a functional deficiency? What specific nutrients will work best for this person? When is the person sufficient? How does the environment factor in? These considerations help us create personalized recommendations for each client and patient.

We carefully review your top health concerns alongside your functional symptom results, enabling us to pinpoint imbalances and uncover potential root causes of your symptoms.

Supplements can help expedite healing, especially when addressing nutritional deficiencies or specific health challenges. While we often recommend temporary “band aid” supplements after reviewing the Personalized Health Plan, they are not mandatory. Many clients and patients can only tolerate one or two supports, and we work closely with each individual to meet them where they are.

Whenever possible, we aim to minimize supplement use and explore alternative options. For instance, we may recommend castor oil packs or IV therapies instead of oral liver and gallbladder supports.

However, certain conditions may require specific interventions. For example, chronic infections like Lyme often necessitate herbal treatments if antibiotics are not used, and binders are typically recommended for mold illness.

While we strive to accommodate client and patient preferences, supplements and supports are sometimes essential for effective healing.

No, we believe in bio individuality and meet clients and patients where they are. While being strictly carnivore is not the only path to healing, we do require the inclusion of animal-based foods as they are essential for optimal health.

We are unable to work with individuals who are unwilling to incorporate any animal-based foods into their diet.

We provide environmental testing for all individuals—our recommendations will always advise for a meat-centric diet as part of the healing protocol.

Nothing is required, but we highly recommend using a Food and Mood Journal or at least our Symptom Tracker. While some clients and patients may feel triggered or overwhelmed by tracking food and water, we offer alternative tools to help monitor progress. We believe that tracking, in some form, is essential for meaningful measurement and effective troubleshooting.

We’ll work with you to find tools and a path that aligns with your needs and comfort.

We can help answer any questions you may have so you are confident in your decision to partner with the Empower Functional Health practice.
