Description

The Organic Acids Test (OAT) is a comprehensive urine test that evaluates more than 75 metabolic markers to help assess foundational health and biochemical function. This includes insights into intestinal yeast and bacterial overgrowths, detoxification imbalances, neurotransmitter metabolism, energy production, oxalate levels, mitochondrial health, and nutrient status (like B6, B12, C, CoQ10, NAC, and glutathione precursors).

Unlike blood tests that give you a snapshot in time, the OAT offers a functional overview of how your body is processing fuel, detoxifying waste, and managing neurological and cellular stress.

Why it matters

The Organic Acids Test is often a missing link for clients and patients who eat clean but still feel inflamed, fatigued, mentally foggy, or unable to heal fully.

It helps identify functional blocks that can’t be seen through standard blood work—like hidden Candida or Clostridia overgrowths, folate or neurotransmitter metabolism imbalances, oxidative stress, or mitochondrial dysfunction. These subtle imbalances can drive mood disorders, fatigue, sleep problems, skin conditions, poor detoxification, and more.

It’s especially helpful in chronic illness, neurological concerns, and unexplained symptoms. The test is also one of the few to measure oxalate levels, which are strongly associated with joint pain, connective tissue issues, and the body’s ability to release heavy metals.

The OATS test provides clues for a targeted plan if you’re struggling with anxiety, histamine sensitivity, behavioral concerns, or gut issues.

Symptoms it may relate to

  • Fatigue, brain fog, or low energy
  • Mood swings, irritability, or anxiety
  • Poor sleep or sleep/wake cycle imbalances
  • Chronic bloating or digestive distress
  • Food sensitivities or histamine issues
  • Neurological symptoms or behavioral changes
  • Joint or connective tissue pain
  • Poor focus or attention
  • Sluggish detoxification
  • Inflammatory skin conditions
  • Mitochondrial dysfunction or poor growth (in children)

What this includes

  • Urine Organic Acids Test (75+ metabolic markers)
  • Evaluation of gut microbial overgrowths (yeast, fungus, Clostridia)
  • Oxalate metabolism (oxalic acid levels)
  • Neurotransmitter metabolites (dopamine, serotonin, norepinephrine)
  • Mitochondrial function and fatty acid metabolism
  • Detoxification stress and oxidative damage markers
  • Vitamin and cofactor status: B6, B5, B12, C, NAC, CoQ10, glutathione-related markers
  • Insight into methylation and folate metabolism
  • Full Empower Functional Health practitioner interpretation and recommendations
  • Optional retesting 90 days after protocol changes or new interventions
