If you’re taking anything containing iodine, kelp, or seaweed (including multivitamins with iodine), please avoid these before your test. Additionally, if you take vitamin C supplements, wait at least 1 hour after taking vitamin C before consuming the load tablet.

Description

The 24-Hour Urine Iodine Loading Test is a functional assessment used to determine iodine sufficiency at the whole-body level. After ingesting a 50mg iodine/iodide tablet (LugoTab), all urine is collected for the next 24 hours. The goal is to evaluate how much iodine your body retains versus excretes. A well-saturated body should excrete 90% or more of the iodine consumed. This test is commonly used before starting iodine therapy and again after 3 months of supplementation to track progress toward sufficiency.

Why it matters

Iodine plays a central role in thyroid hormone production, detoxification, immune function, breast and reproductive health, and neurological development. However, many individuals are unknowingly deficient—especially when exposed to halides like bromide and fluoride, which block iodine uptake. Assessing iodine sufficiency is essential for anyone with low thyroid symptoms, chronic fatigue, hormonal imbalances, or detox challenges. Understanding halide burden can also guide detoxification and reduce symptoms of chemical sensitivity.

Symptoms it may relate to

Low iodine levels or halide toxicity may contribute to:

  • Fatigue or low energy
  • Brain fog or poor focus
  • Feeling cold in normal environments
  • Menstrual irregularities or low libido
  • Dry skin and hair loss
  • Slow digestion or constipation
  • Weight gain
  • Poor detoxification or chemical sensitivity

What this includes

  • 50mg iodine/iodide tablet (LugoTab)
  • 24-hour urine collection kit
  • Halide testing for bromide, fluoride, and chloride (additional fee)
  • Lab analysis by Hakala Labs
  • Hakala Labs sends results to our practice directly. You will receive personalized insights and recommendations from the EFH practitioner team.

How it works

  • Avoid iodine 72 hours before the test (if retesting post-supplementation).
  • Void your bladder before taking the tablet.
  • Collect all urine for the next 24 hours.
  • Follow instructions in the kit, especially if volume exceeds 3 liters.
  • Ship your sample to the lab.
  • Receive your results and personalized guidance via email from Empower Functional Health.
  • For in-depth case management or interpretation, a separate 1-on-1 session is recommended.

Important notes

  • Not available in CA or NY.
  • Consult your healthcare provider before testing if you have Hashimoto’s, thyroid surgery, or radiation history.
  • Most clients and patients who take the Iodine test benefit from completing the EFH flagship Personalized Health Plan (PHP) alongside testing.

Thank you, Judy. This was extremely helpful for me. I was always scared of taking iodine. I never knew this test existed.
