This in-depth test evaluates whole-body iodine sufficiency after a 50mg iodine/iodide challenge. It measures how much iodine is retained versus excreted in urine over 24 hours, and also assesses detox of halides like bromide and fluoride. Includes full EFH practitioner analysis with personalized recommendations.

If you’re taking anything containing iodine, kelp, or seaweed (including multivitamins with iodine), please avoid these before your test. If you are on thyroid medication, make sure to leave at least 1 hour between your thyroid dose and the load tablet. Additionally, if you take vitamin C supplements, wait at least 1 hour after taking vitamin C before consuming the load tablet.
The 24-Hour Urine Iodine Loading Test is a functional assessment used to determine iodine sufficiency at the whole-body level. After ingesting a 50mg iodine/iodide tablet (LugoTab), all urine is collected for the next 24 hours. The goal is to evaluate how much iodine your body retains versus excretes. A well-saturated body should excrete 90% or more of the iodine consumed. This test is commonly used before starting iodine therapy and again after 3 months of supplementation to track progress toward sufficiency.
Why it matters
Iodine plays a central role in thyroid hormone production, detoxification, immune function, breast and reproductive health, and neurological development. However, many individuals are unknowingly deficient—especially when exposed to halides like bromide and fluoride, which block iodine uptake. Assessing iodine sufficiency is essential for anyone with low thyroid symptoms, chronic fatigue, hormonal imbalances, or detox challenges. Understanding halide burden can also guide detoxification and reduce symptoms of chemical sensitivity.

Important notes
Thank you, Judy. This was extremely helpful for me. I was always scared of taking iodine. I never knew this test existed.
